Ardhakāyaṁ mahāvīryaṁ
candradityavimardanam |
siṁhikāgarbhasambhūtaṁ
taṁ rāhuṁ praṇamāmyaham ||
I bow down to Rāhu, who has a half-body form, possesses great strength, torments the Moon and the Sun (by causing eclipses), and who was born from the womb of Siṁhikā.
- Rāhu is a shadow planet (chāyā-graha) in Hindu cosmology, not a physical celestial body but a mathematical point representing the ascending lunar node.
- He is mythologically portrayed as a demon who drank the nectar of immortality and was beheaded by Viṣṇu; his head became Rāhu, and his body Ketu.
- Because of this myth, Rāhu is shown as having only a head or upper body.
- He is said to "devour" the Sun and Moon, causing solar and lunar eclipses, which is poetically described here as "tormenting" them.
- Siṁhikā is named as his mother in various Purāṇas.
