yogena cittasya padena vācāṁ
malam śarīrasya ca vaidyakena |
yo’pākarottaṁ pravaraṁ munīnāṁ
patañjaliṁ prāñjalir ānato’smi ||
I respectfully bow with folded hands to Sage Patañjali,
who purified the mind through Yoga,
the speech through grammar,
and the body through medicine —
the greatest of sages.
  • Mind: Patañjali offered the system of Yoga to purify the mind and achieve self-mastery.
  • Speech: Through Pāṇini’s grammar tradition, Patañjali contributed a major commentary (Mahābhāṣya) that refined Sanskrit language and expression.
  • Body: He is also linked with Āyurveda (traditional Indian medicine), showing his mastery in healing the body.

Thus, Patañjali is revered as a triple benefactor — uplifting human beings at all three levels:

  • Mental (Yoga),
  • Verbal (Grammar),
  • Physical (Medicine).
