Radha

About this text

Radha (Rādhā) is Krishna’s supreme beloved and one of the most profound embodiments of divine love in the Hindu devotional tradition. Although her literary and theological prominence develops especially in later Sanskrit and vernacular Vaiṣṇava literature, Rādhā eventually becomes inseparable from the religious understanding of Krishna himself.

In traditions such as Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavism, Rādhā is not regarded merely as Krishna’s human lover. She is understood as his eternal hlādinī-śakti, the divine potency of bliss and love through which Krishna experiences and shares his own spiritual happiness. Their apparently romantic relationship therefore becomes a theology of the relationship between God and love itself.

Rādhā represents prema, love in its most complete, self-forgetting form. Her longing, separation, jealousy, intimacy, and total dedication are treated as increasingly subtle states of spiritual realization. The central idea of Rādhā is that the highest knowledge of the divine is ultimately not possession or power, but perfect love.
