Brihaspati (Bṛhaspati) is the divine teacher and priest of the devas and the planetary deity associated with Jupiter. His roots reach deep into Vedic religion, where Bṛhaspati appears as a powerful figure connected with sacred speech, prayer, priestly wisdom, and spiritual authority. Later, he becomes famous as Deva-guru, the preceptor who advises Indra and the celestial gods.
As one of the Navagrahas, Bṛhaspati represents wisdom, learning, ethics, religion, counsel, generosity, and expansion. In Jyotiṣa, he is regarded as one of the principal benefic planets and is associated with teachers, scripture, children, prosperity, good judgment, and higher knowledge.
His importance is therefore not merely intellectual. Bṛhaspati personifies wisdom that provides direction. If Budha represents the ability to think skillfully, Bṛhaspati represents the ability to understand what is worth pursuing and why. He is the archetype of the teacher whose knowledge is joined with moral and spiritual discernment.
