Dhanvantari (Dhanvantari) is the divine physician of Hindu tradition and the deity most closely associated with Ayurveda, the classical Indian system of medicine. His most famous appearance occurs during the churning of the Ocean of Milk, when he emerges carrying the vessel of amṛta, the nectar of immortality.
Various texts preserve additional traditions concerning Dhanvantari, including accounts of his manifestation within a royal lineage connected with Kāśī and his role in transmitting medical knowledge. Vaiṣṇava traditions frequently understand him as a manifestation of Vishnu.
Dhanvantari represents a view of medicine in which health is not simply the removal of symptoms. Ayurveda considers the balance of body, environment, diet, behavior, and mental condition, and Dhanvantari personifies the intelligence that restores order to living systems. Physicians and practitioners therefore honor him as a sacred source of healing knowledge and a reminder that preserving life is itself a form of service.
