Shiva Mantras

• Śambhu is the peace-giving, benevolent aspect that brings liberation and bliss.

Chanting this mantra invites divine wisdom, inner clarity, and the awakening of higher consciousness through Śiva’s grace.

We meditate upon Nīlakaṇṭha, the blue-throated one.
We contemplate the radiant-limbed Lord.
May Śiva illuminate our intellect.

• Nīlakaṇṭha means “the blue-throated one,” referring to Śiva drinking the deadly halāhala poison during the churning of the ocean (samudra manthana) to save the cosmos. His throat turned blue, symbolizing sacrifice and compassion.
• Viśadaṅga means “of pure, radiant limbs,” suggesting clarity, luminosity, and spiritual beauty.
• This mantra praises Śiva as the one who absorbs the world’s negativity, remains untouched by it, and radiates purity and grace.
• This mantra is for purification, fearlessness, protection from toxins (physical and emotional), and cultivating compassion.

• Śambhu means “the bestower of bliss” or “source of happiness”. It emphasizes Śiva’s benevolent, peaceful, and blissful nature.
• Mahādeva is the “Great God”, beyond all deities, the supreme being.

• Naṭarāja means “Lord of Dance” — Śiva in his cosmic dance form that represents the rhythm of creation, preservation, and dissolution.
• This mantra reflects dynamic consciousness, the continuous flow of time, energy, and transformation.
• Meditating on Naṭarāja brings an understanding of change, balance, and transcendence through art and movement.

• Aṅgikam: His very body is the cosmos — every movement expresses creation.
• Vācikam: All languages, Vedas, mantras, and sound are his speech.
• Āhāryam: The adornment in his divine performance is the moon, stars, and cosmic beauty.
• Sāttvikaṁ Śivam: He embodies pure consciousness, beyond dualities.

This verse is often recited:

• At the beginning of classical dance and music performances (especially Bharatanāṭyam)
• Before or during worship of Śiva in his aspect as Nāṭarāja, the Lord of Cosmic Rhythm
• As part of dedicatory invocations in temples and schools of performing arts
