Shukra (Śukra) is the planetary deity of Venus and the celebrated teacher of the asuras. Known as Śukrācārya, he belongs to the lineage of the sage Bhṛgu and stands in a fascinating counterpoint to Bṛhaspati, the guru of the devas. Hindu narratives portray Śukra as extraordinarily learned, disciplined, politically intelligent, and able to restore life through his knowledge of the mṛta-sañjīvanī science.
In Jyotiṣa, Śukra governs beauty, love, sexuality, pleasure, art, luxury, relationships, fertility, diplomacy, and material enjoyment. Yet we should not reduce him to a simple god of sensuality. He is also an ascetic, teacher, strategist, and possessor of secret knowledge.
Śukra therefore embodies a sophisticated principle: the intelligence of desire. He represents humanity’s attraction toward beauty and enjoyment, but also the knowledge required to navigate the material world without becoming completely mastered by it.
