A word of unusual semantic range in the ātmārāma verse. Grantha can mean a knot or binding, but also a book, so nirgrantha may open toward one freed from knots, free from attachment, unbound by scriptural formality, without formal learning, or without possessions. It is one of the terms whose legitimate breadth generates Mahāprabhu’s many readings.
