About this text

The naturally marked black stones of the Gaṇḍakī, worshipped as self-manifest forms of Viṣṇu rather than as symbols of Him. Their spiral markings are read as the Lord’s cakra; paleontology reads the same spirals as ammonite shells. The name also belongs to the region where they are found.
