Śalya, king of Madra and brother of Mādrī, and so uncle to Nakula and Sahadeva. Manoeuvred into fighting for Duryodhana, he became the fourth commander of the Kaurava army after Karṇa’s death and led it for about half of the eighteenth day, until Yudhiṣṭhira killed him at midday — the last commander of the organized Kaurava force.
