Daughter of Dakṣa and wife of Kaśyapa, mother of the Daityas — the name is a patronymic, Daitya meaning ‘descendant of Diti’. Her sons Hiraṇyākṣa and Hiraṇyakaśipu head a line that runs through Prahlāda to Bali Mahārāja. She later seeks a son able to defeat Indra and instead becomes mother of the forty-nine Maruts.
