The river that entered the universe when Vāmanadeva, as Trivikrama, pierced its shell with his step — water the lecturer identifies with the Kṣīra-sāgara. Its force was such that Śiva received and held it in his matted locks, which is why he is Gaṅgādhara. At Gautama’s request she descends again as the Godāvarī.
