Īśvara — controller. Gauḍīya theology reserves absolute independence to Kṛṣṇa alone: everyone else, from Balarāma and the eternal associates down to the conditioned jīva, exists and acts in dependence upon Him. The word therefore cannot be used univocally of Bhagavān and of anyone who serves Him.
