The Khāṇḍava forest beside the Yamunā, burned by Agni with the help of Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna in the Ādi-parvan. Agni had been repeatedly thwarted by Indra’s rains; in exchange for their help he obtained Gāṇḍīva and the two inexhaustible quivers from Varuṇa for Arjuna, along with the monkey-bannered chariot and its Gandharva horses. The episode equips Arjuna for the whole of his later career.
