Padmāvatī, traditionally identified as the wife of the poet Jayadeva and a dancer in the service of Jagannātha at Purī. Jayadeva names her in the second verse of the Gīta-govinda, calling himself the master who sets her feet in motion — an early signal that the poem belongs as much to dance and music as to literature.
