Ṛṣabhadeva is an avatāra of Viṣṇu described in the fifth canto of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, who ruled as a king, instructed his hundred sons — the eldest being Bharata — on the purpose of human life, and then adopted the life of an avadhūta.
