One’s own prescribed duty — the work that follows from a person’s actual nature and situation rather than from ambition or imitation. The Bhagavad-gītā holds it better to perform one’s own duty imperfectly than another’s well, and Gauḍīya commentators read that as a statement about honesty and eligibility, not about the relative holiness of occupations.
