Reasoning, dialectic, inference constructed by the intellect. Vedānta uses tarka constantly and denies it independence: reasoning assisted by revelation is śruty-anugṛhīta-tarka, while kevala-tarka — reasoning claiming to stand on its own — is what Vedānta-sūtra 2.1.11 calls apratiṣṭha, without a resting place.
