Dvārakā, the island city Kṛṣṇa established in the western sea after leaving Mathurā, and the setting of His royal pastimes. Its iconography is deliberately distinct from that of Vraja: chariot and banner, weapons, assembly hall and queens in place of the flute, the cows and the forest. The Purāṇas describe its submergence at the close of Kṛṣṇa’s manifest presence on earth.
