A great authority — one in whom teaching, conduct and scriptural understanding agree, and whose path can therefore be followed where individual reasoning gives out. The Mahābhārata’s answer to the question of the path, mahājano yena gataḥ sa panthāḥ, is the source of the term’s currency.
