Kṛṣṇa’s father in Mathurā, imprisoned with Devakī by Kaṁsa, who carries the newborn across the Yamunā to Gokula and returns with Yaśodā’s daughter. In a distinctive Gauḍīya reading the Harivaṁśa also gives Vasudeva as a name of Nanda — vasu, wealth, and deva, lord: the wealthiest of the gopas.
