Kṛṣṇa’s father in Vraja and head of the cowherd community, whose herds are reckoned in the lectures at some nine hundred thousand cows. He has five brothers, the eldest of them Upananda, whose council decides the community’s moves; when they leave Vṛndāvana it is Nanda who settles on Nandīśvara Parvata, the hill that gives Nandagrāma its name.
