Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, 1486–1534) was the Bengali saint and religious leader whose life transformed Krishna devotion in eastern India and gave rise to the tradition now known as Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavism. Born in Navadvīpa as Viśvambhara Miśra, he was first celebrated as a brilliant scholar and later as an ecstatic devotee of Krishna.

Caitanya placed extraordinary emphasis on saṅkīrtana, the congregational chanting of Krishna’s names, teaching that devotion could be cultivated directly through remembrance, singing, humility, and loving service. After accepting the renounced order of sannyāsa, he spent much of his later life in Jagannātha Purī, absorbed increasingly in intense states of devotional love.

His followers understand Caitanya not merely as a saint but as Krishna appearing with the love and disposition of Rādhā. His life therefore becomes a theological exploration of bhakti’s deepest question: what does divine love itself feel like from within?
